Secrets” is a multi-part series contributed by Ann Corfman. Ann is a retired teacher and member of the Johnny Appleseed Society at Urbana University. Along with her writing partner, Nancy Sherwood, Ann is an authority on this local celebrity. Ann and Nancy’s book “Appleseed Values” illustrates John Chapman’s (aka Appleseed) values and asks readers to consider whether or not they live by the same.
Now that you know about the Johnny Appleseed Learning Center and Museum and John Chapman himself, I would feel remiss if I didn’t leave you with my list of the best John “Appleseed” Chapman books for all ages.
FOR THE YOUNGEST READERS TO READ OR FOR YOU TO READ TO THEM
In addition, the Johnny Appleseed Society has published a wonderful cookbook, *Apple Recipes. This book contains information about John Chapman and recipes from local cooks, as well as, vintage apple recipes.
One last thing, this is the twentieth anniversary of the founding of the Johnny Appleseed Learning Center and Museum. To celebrate, the Society is planning two events:
“The Many Faces of Johnny Appleseed” will open on May 28th in the Museum on the campus of Urbana University. It will show the way Johnny was pictured by various illustrators as there are no photographs of him.
The Twentieth Anniversary will also be celebrated in September, the month in which he was born in 1774. Watch for announcements about this event.
I hope you have enjoyed this series about John Chapman. I invite you to visit us and join the Society. We always need volunteers and I hope you will consider working with us.
*Books which may be purchased in the Johnny Appleseed Learning Center and Museum on the campus of Urbana University in Urbana, Ohio.
